Mabon Harvest Bread Recipe

Mabon is a time of balance, reflection, and honoring the light within. With gratitude, we make bread for blessings this coming season. Mabon is a day filled with gratitude, appreciation, and joy for what you planted in the early spring and are harvesting now. Autumn is a magical time of year. Indulge, embrace, and enjoy the energies of the Harvest Season!

In magick, we learn that to gain one thing (like bread), you must sacrifice something else (like time and effort). If you want to eat, you need to work—even putting bread on the table. It makes you appreciate how easy we have it in our Modern World.

Another reason to make bread this Mabon is to connect to your food and the ingredients. When you put your hands into the ingredients, you imbue your energy into your cooking. As you live in the moment and focus on the task at hand, time slows down. The act of making bread becomes meditative as the ingredients transform into a heavenly-smelling loaf of Harvest Bread.

We make the dough by hand to mix it with our energy and intentions for the coming season. We pour specific energy into our creation. This is an act of magick. Focus positive energy into the dough as you blend the ingredients, infuse the bread with blessings for anyone who partakes. Then, when you offer the bread to the Goddess or consume it with friends and family, you take the magick into your body and are blessed by your food.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rye flour

  • 1 cup spelt flour

  • 1 cup buckwheat flour

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp. pink Himalayan salt

  • 2 Tbsp. brewer’s yeast (optional: not the same as bread yeast)

  • 2 oz. seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, poppy, caraway, fennel, or sesame)

  • 1 oz. dried herbs (Rosemary, Thyme, Lavender, Sage, or garlic)

  • 2 cups of nut or oat milk

  • 1 egg yolk

Optional: You can replace the different flours with wheat or white flour to make variations of this bread.

Special Ingredient: Your positive energy and thoughts of blessings for your loved ones and yourself.

Step 1: Making the Dough

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.

  2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients (flours, baking soda, salt, and Brewer’s yeast).

  3. Use a big spoon to blend the dry ingredients. Scrape the flour from the sides of the bowl into the center repeatedly until it incorporates all the flour.

  4. Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture and pour in the milk.

  5. Add the herbs and seeds of choice. You can also add more seeds to the top of the bread before baking (sesame and poppy seeds work well for this).

  6. Make sure your hands are clean. Then, blend the dough with your hands, as you chant or sing a blessing song. Think of the blessings you wish to infuse in the bread, like health, happiness, and success. Imagine "pouring" your energy and blessings into the bread. Speak your blessings out loud and blow them into the dough. You may want your family and friends to take turns blending, too.

Dough-Kneading Chant

Bless this dough.

Bless this bread.

Bless all life

with health ahead.

Step 2: Preparing the Dough for Baking

  1. Grease a bread pan, or line it with parchment.

  2. Pour the dough into the pan and press it down.

  3. Beat an egg yolk with one Tbsp. of milk. Brush it over the bread. This helps it brown.

  4. Sprinkle the bread with seeds or dried herbs, if desired.

Step 3: Baking the Bread

  1. Put the bread in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, until it sounds hollow when you tap it. If the bread's top browns too soon, cover it with foil.

  2. When browned, take it out of the oven and wrap it in a towel for 30 minutes.

Traditionally, the first piece of bread is offered to the Goddess or returned to the Earth as a symbol of the Earth Mother’s sacrifice for your abundance.

As you pass the bread, give the traditional blessing: "May you never be hunger."
