Artist Statement:
The creative process is like having a key to a secret room. It's fun, exciting, and adventurous.Travel is my key to unlock the secret room of my creative soul. It could be a day trip, a walk in the woods, or a journey to the other side of the world. New Cultures and nature in general provide me with unbelievable photographic opportunities. After returning to my studio, I warm up with quick acrylic sketches on watercolor paper. I love how these sketches combine an Impressionist's color with whimsical, folk art design into my own wild, succulent style, in which I paint from the inside out, delighting in the process of being immersed in the inner and outer world. Then, I take that feeling to a larger canvas where the colors blend and the story unfolds.
Currently, the creative muses use me as a catalyst for their messages. I paint as the spirits move me without expectation of the outcome. The dichotomy of literal and figurative symbols show up in my work and act as the key to open the door where the creative spirit and the methodical mind merge, allowing each person to take a different message from the piece. The viewer is drawn away from the immediate moment and into the story before them.
